Sandro Costantino was born in the Dominican Republic of Italian parents. He started his violin studies there and in 1980 moved to Portland, Maine, USA, to study with the Portland String Quartet. Further studies in Italy where he graduated from the Guiseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan led to engagements with the Pomeriggi Musicali Orchestra, the RAI Orchestra of Milan and finally the orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala. In 1987 Sandro returned to the US to undertake graduate studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Walter Trampler and Louis Krasner. That same year he moved to Wellington as a founding member of the New Zealand String Quartet returning to Italy two years later as a member of the Solisti Veneti chamber orchestra of Padua. Sandro has been a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 1995, a tutor with the SYO and SBS Youth Orchestras as well as a mentor and tutor in the SSO's Sinfonia and Playerlink programs.
